Vozrozhdeniya, also known as Rebirth Island, was a former island of the Aral Sea or South Aral Sea. Due to the Aral shrinking, it became a peninsula in mid 2001 and finally part of the mainland. Since the disappearance of the southeast Aral Sea in 2008, Vozrozhdeniya no longer exists as a distinct geographical location. The area is now shared by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
Rebirth Island was one of the main laboratories and testing sites for the Soviet Union's Microbiological warfare. In 1948, a top secret Soviet bioweapons was established there, which tested a variety of agents. Including anthrax, smallpox, plague, brucellosis and tularemia.
In the 1990's, the island's danger was spread by Soviet defectors. It was here that anthrax spores and bubonic plague bacilli were stored and made into weapons. The islands main town was Kantubek, which lies in ruin today, but once had about 1500 inhabitants.
The island was abandoned in 1992, but many containers were not properly stored or destroyed. Over the last decade many containers have leaked.
Part of the campaign of Call of Duty: Black Ops takes place on Rebirth Island.
